RIVER PLATE Drop Into The ABYSS
RIVER PLATE - the most successful club in Argentinian football - have been relegated into the country's B league for the first time in their 110 year history.
River Plate needed to win by two clear goals against Belgrano to save themselves from relegation.
However a dramatic end to the season saw River Plate only manage a 1-1 draw at home.
River started well when Mariano Pavano scored after only six minutes to give them a precious 1-0 lead. They didn't manage to build on that and Guillermo Farre equalised in the 2nd half.
River were awarded a penalty midway through the 2nd half - a lifeline - but Pavone saw his effort saved by the Belgrano 'keeper.
